जंतर-मंतर पर छात्र प्रदर्शन के दौरान प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी के खिलाफ कथित आपत्तिजनक टिप्पणी, रुचिका सिंह पर दर्ज एफआईआर और उसके बाद कॉकरोच जनता पार्टी (CJP) के संस्थापक अभिजीत दीपके के तीखे सवालों ने पूरे विवाद को नई दिशा दे दी है। दीपके ने कानून के समान लागू होने, सोशल मीडिया पर कथित आपत्तिजनक बयानों, नेताओं की भाषा और पुलिस कार्रवाई को लेकर सरकार से जवाब मांगा है। उन्होंने 20 जुलाई के छात्र प्रदर्शन में पुलिस पर कथित लाठीचार्ज और छात्राओं के साथ दुर्व्यवहार के आरोप लगाते हुए प्रधानमंत्री से सार्वजनिक माफी की मांग भी की। वहीं दूसरी ओर, आरटीआई कार्यकर्ता अमित तिवारी ने CJP की फंडिंग और कथित लीगल डिफेंस फंड की जांच की मांग करते हुए निर्वाचन आयोग और CGST को पत्र भेजा है। यह मामला अब अभिव्यक्ति की स्वतंत्रता, कानून की समानता, छात्र आंदोलन और राजनीतिक आरोप-प्रत्यारोप के बड़े विवाद में बदल चुका है।
